Job Description

Position Summary

The Physical Education Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, standards-aligned physical education instruction that promotes the physical, social, and emotional development of all students. The Physical Education Teacher will create an active, inclusive learning environment that builds healthy habits, teamwork, and a lifelong love of physical activity. 

 

This is an on-site position based at a school site; remote work is not available for this role.

Essential Functions

Instruction and Curriculum

  • Plans, prepares, and delivers engaging Physical Education lessons aligned to California State Standards for Physical Education and the school’s instructional goals
  • Teaches students the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for a lifetime of physical activity and healthy living
  • Designs and implements units covering a range of activities including individual sports, team sports, fitness, and movement skills
  • Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including English Language Learners and students with IEPs or 504 plans
  • Integrates social-emotional learning into Physical Education instruction to foster teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-regulation
  • Maintains a safe and organized learning environment in the gymnasium, field, and all outdoor spaces

Student Support and Culture

  • Builds positive, respectful relationships with all students and models the ICEF's RECIPE philosophy
  • Implements Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) practices consistently in the Physical Education setting
  • Collaborates with the Dean and school counselor to support the behavioral and social-emotional needs of students
  • Communicates regularly with families about student progress, participation, and wellness
  • Supports school-wide culture initiatives, including pep rallies, athletic events, and extracurricular programming

Assessment and Data

  • Assesses student fitness levels and skill development using a variety of assessment tools
  • Maintains accurate records of student participation, skill progress, and grades
  • Uses data to inform instructional decisions and set goals for individual and class-wide improvement
  • Participates in data analysis cycles and collaborative planning with grade-level and content-area teams

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participates in ICEF Professional Development, staff meetings, school events, and parent information nights as required
  • Collaborates with colleagues to support a cohesive, high-performing school culture
  • Maintains work hours that may extend beyond the school day for athletic events, Saturday school, or other professional duties
  • Is available for contact with parents, students, and staff to address concerns outside of class time as needed
  • Ensures that all equipment and facilities are maintained in safe, working condition and reports hazards promptly

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, run, demonstrate physical activities, and supervise students outdoors. The employee must frequently communicate clearly with students and staff. The employee may be required to lift, move, or carry Physical Education equipment and supplies up to fifty (50) pounds.

Specific physical abilities required include the ability to demonstrate sports and movement activities, monitor large groups across varied environments (gymnasium, field, track), and provide immediate response to student safety needs.

The employee regularly works in both indoor (gymnasium) and outdoor (field, track, courts) settings. Noise levels vary and may be high during group activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or a related field
  • Hold a valid California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Physical Education 
  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain prior to start date
  • Strong record of fostering student engagement, physical development, and healthy habits
  • Knowledge of California State Standards for Physical Education and FitnessGram assessment
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion in the Physical Education setting for students of all backgrounds and abilities
  • Excellent classroom management, communication, and organizational skills
  • Proficient use of Google-based applications
  • Tuberculosis (TB) clearance
  • Background check clearance
  • Commitment to educational equity and ICEF’s mission

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of teaching physical education in a public charter school, charter management organization, or public school district
  • Experience coaching youth athletics or extracurricular sports programs
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Master’s Degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or a related field
