Position Description:

Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education, the School Speech & Language Pathologist is directly responsible for the specific speech therapy needs of students potentially ranging from grades TK-12. The Speech and Language Pathologist will also provide training and consultation with staff, families, students and our larger community.

Essential Functions:

SPEECH THERAPY 20%

  • Screen, evaluate and provide therapy, speech correction and special training to students with a variety of communication disabilities; provide individual and group treatment and instruction to students with various speech disabilities; establish and maintain treatment and therapeutic goals and objectives to improve student communication skills and enhance learning.
  • Monitor, assess and adjust therapy in response to student needs and progress; administer, score and interpret diagnostic tests to identify language, speech, hearing and other communication needs of students; place students in appropriate treatment and therapeutic programs; develop and implement remedial strategies, goals, objectives, schedules and techniques; present assessment results during IEP team meetings.

REFERRALS & ASSESSMENTS 20%

  • Assist teachers in screening referrals for speech therapy; observe and assess student conditions, diagnose speech problems and recommend student placement in appropriate school, special education and other programs; determine eligibility for services and therapy; follow up to assure students receive appropriate services.
  • Review and analyze student assessments and records; identify, diagnose and formulate educational, treatment and development plans and strategies for various communication disabilities and other student issues; coordinate and oversee therapeutic student drills, exercises, practices and assignments; work with individual students to correct or minimize speech disabilities.

PARENT SUPPORT 15%

  • Meet and confer with parents, staff, faculty, administrators and others concerning speech and other communication needs and issues of students; respond to parent requests; update parents concerning student progress; resolve therapeutic issues and conflicts in a proper and timely manner.
  • Provide recommendations to parents concerning methods for enhancing the communication and educational progress of students; refer parents to community resources, health agencies and outside therapy services as appropriate.
  • Provide support services to parents/guardians as needed.

CARE COORDINATION 15%

  • Provide consultation and technical assistance to students, parents, staff, administrators and outside agencies concerning speech and other communication disabilities, therapy, instruction and related activities; respond to inquiries and provide information concerning related plans, issues, problems, strategies, goals, objectives, principles, practices, techniques and procedures.
  • Coordinate the speech therapy program with other school programs and services; report educational and therapeutic progress of students to school personnel.
  • Coordinate and/or collaborate with a range of individuals/agencies to promote and provide comprehensive services to students and families.

DOCUMENTATION & REPORTING 15%

  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports and files related to students, disabilities, assessments, therapy, progress and assigned activities.
  • Proficiently use technology to communicate, compile reports, and collect data.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES 15%

  • Provide and/or assist in professional development for staff, parents, and/or community.
  • Participate in professional growth activities on a yearly basis including recertification in CPI as needed, workshops, in-services, professional reading materials, SELPA trainings, and/or other trainings provided by ICEF.
  • Participate in building or program activities and meetings.
 

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications:

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

Required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet the changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: effectively leading meetings, comfortably giving academic presentations, exhibiting appropriate manners including poise, tact, good judgment, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with ICEF personnel, community representatives, parents, and students. An ideal candidate for this position is someone who is highly organized and self-motivated. Candidate must have the ability to schedule a significant number of activities, trainings, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when making decisions. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined as well as undefined and self-created processes; and operate job-required equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diverse set of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines. 

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Frequent local travel and occasional out-of-town may be required for trainings, seminars, or workshops. This position will work in a shared office space and will be required to visit the school sites on a frequent basis. When out on school sites, the following physical demands may be requested: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling. Generally, the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

 

EDUCATION

Targeted job related education that meets organization’s prerequisite requirements. Job related experience within a specialized field with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
